Responsive: Penguin A Clockwork Orange Product Proposal

The problems that I aim to solve are...

1) I hope to solve the problem of making a new and inventive design. The brief asks for an imaginative idea that also has a place on the market, but stands out on the shelf.

2) Another problem to solve for this specific book is that it wants to appeal to a contemporary reader. What is a contemporary reader? To me it is one who is passionate enough about reading to pick up this book. We are living in a digital age where everything is shiny, colourful and new, therefore this is something that I will have to try and achieve quite well!

3) Being original. Lots of covers have an eye or a hat, and are very bare, I need to do the opposite of this.

In order to solve these problems I will...

1) Though these seem like challenging issues, I am hoping to solve them through thinking outside of the box. I want to look at past covers for this particular book, and the ones that exist in bookshops today. I think visiting Waterstones or WHSmiths to look for not just this book, but the others in this brief as well, will benefit me greatly. I will be able to see what has been done, and then come up with solutions that are brand new in my mind.

2) Use a digital technique for this cover to appeal to the contemporary reader. Be simplistic and minimalistic, but use bold colours! This way it will stand out on the shelf.

3) Think about what other have not done, and then do that.

I will be aiming to communicate the ideas/themes/moods of...

1) Time. Obviously as the title insinuates 'clockwork'.

2) Futurism. A key theme within the novel.

3) Ambiguity. This novel is a really unique and a beautifully told story, but has very distant themes to what is considered 'normal' of 'fun' that is of today. I want the reader to take a peak into this, but not be obviously aware of it, otherwise it could turn some people off (I wouldn't have immediately read it either!).

To an audience of...

1) Literature lovers. Those who love reading will want to pick this book up.

2) Readers who like drama and action and aren't afraid of taboo topics. You have to be quite open minded reading this book! However to be appropriate for its market, I cannot go too extreme with the content on the front although I want it to stand out on a shelf, I want it to stand out for all the right reasons.

3) A classroom environment! This book is also taught in schools across the world, so I want it to be suitable for a classroom environment as well as a bookshelf, which are challenges I am excited to take on!
