I started off by researching some female empowerment pieces to get my brain inspired and motivated for this book cover! I am proud to be feminist so I wanted to do Caitlin Moran proud and make a design she would like! I found so many useful quotes to take influence from, as well as see other ways people have artistically created ways to promote feminism and female empowerment! This made me proud to be a woman, and really motivated me to get designing!
A key theme I wanted to focus on in my design however, is digital culture. Penguin highlight this a few times within the brief, and because I find the topic fascinating, I thought I would centre my design around this, whilst also being feminist.
From my 'digital culture' pin board on Pinterest, I was amazed and dumbfounded at the illustrations I found on there. There were so many that even I could relate to, which is scary. I saw a deeper level to social media which I was aware of, but when you see it illustrated like this it makes the fact even more real and frightening. From my findings, I came to the conclusion that the digital 'age/culture' is very social media and technology reliant. People probably spend hours a day on there trying to get more followers, more likes. Everything you can think of is online which is brilliant and scary at the same time. There will probably be a lack of real life social interaction in a few years because everything is done through a screen. I consciously make the decision to 'switch off' when I am at home and don't use social media because I have found it to be a compulsive and you find yourself spending hours on it without realising. I don't do this as much anymore (because I am always extremely busy!!) but since technology is one of the more predominant luxuries of the Western world, I think I am going to involve it as the main theme of my book cover!
Some of my favourite influences:
John Holcroft (These pieces moved me the most!!)
Antoine Gregor (Photographer)
Koren Shadmi (Illustrator)
I found these extremely moving and captivating! I hope I can take a great deal of influence from these artists.
