Responsive: Penguin A Clockwork Oragnge Resarch

Follow Ciara's board Clockwork Orange on Pinterest.
My pin board on Pinterest involved a lot of previous movie posters that i had not seen previously, but also some other inspiration which I affiliated with the title. For example, I found some patterns and orange elements which I thought i could take influence from into my design. I found that there was SO much work out there in relation to the book and the film, and that everything I could think of had already been done. This was hard for me to acknowledge, but it also enabled me to think harder about my composition. I noticed that a lot of the artwork for the book on Pinterest was very simplistic and minimalistic, with the main illustration centred on the poster, so perhaps I should go the opposite and very busy? I would like to have a more intricate design, but keep the colours to a minimum!

However I wanted to do further research on the little ideas that I had begun to think about over the course of the week to spark even more idea generation, and since I think I will be taken the title literally, unlike the existing covers, I decided to research the key words in the title.
Since clockwork is in the name, I decided to put a mood board together to see if I could create some sort of concept for my covers. I was pleasantly surprised at how exciting and intricate the designs are and I can definitely see myself incorporating this into my idea generation some how. Perhaps with a border or an actual clock, either way I love the patterns and even the silhouettes of these clockworks.
Real clockworks.

The real clockworks are very complex which is why I looked at the illustrated ones first. However I love the intricacy of them and how archaic they look. They are an example of how amazing discovery can be, and to think once a long time ago someone invented this! I will definitely be incorporating this into my design.

Orange inspo

Next was 'Orange'. I really want to draw an orange slice or even an orange segment now that I have put all these images together. I think you could make some really exciting patterns with the veins of the orange or even the outlines. I am thinking of now having the orange slice as the face of a clock, but I might change my mind. There are also a lot of shades of orange, some very red and some yellow toned and this might be nice to experiment with also.
Since the brief directly asks for good typography, this was something I have started to experiment with already. I really didn't know what type of text to go for, so I started out basic and then tried to get more stylised. I really like the bottom two, the latter especially resembles the existing logo for 'A Clockwork Orange' books and films, however I think that the brief is insinuating on something different/a change. Therefore I started to experiment with the first of the two that I liked.
I first added an orange stroke to make the text appear more 'bolder', so that the reader can actually see what the title is and who it is by. I then added some drop shadow in red, and then had a go at changing the font to white on an orange background as those are the colours I am thinking of going for. I think the red drop shadow looks a lot better on the orange background and white text than on the white background, as it intensifies the depth and colour. However I still have other options for when I start to really design my covers.
Egs of existing typography I like from Pinterest.

Maybe I could incorporate the fruit into the text? This could be going over board slightly, but I do really like the idea, and will think about trying it after I draw my illustrations!
