Responsive Brief Selection: United Nations Poster for Peace

Whilst looking for another brief that I could do for this week, I chose the United Nations 'Poster for Peace' context in commemoration of their 70th anniversary of the UN General Assembly resolution. I found this brief on the Graphic Competitions website, and I really liked how open they were about their brief. I also am weak for people who are promoting/supporting a cause and therefore got attracted to what this brief called for.

Unlike all the other briefs that I have done, this one gave the least information which for once was actually a little unnerving as I didn't really know what direction to head in. I literally screenshotted their briefs and underlined all the key words that meant something to me. Raising awareness was the obvious one for me, so the poster had to be informative and educational so that those who see it can learn something from it and then pass the information on! 'Inspire' was another word used which is powerful, but I think will be very challenging to convey in one piece. I am willing to take on this challenge, however I will have to think about composition, theme, technique and creativity heavily as this is what they are asking for.
The theme of the poster then, is nuclear weapon disarmament. Obviously this is such a huge threat to EVERYONE, which is why this poster made me alarmed and inspired to do the brief at the same time. After not knowing much about nuclear weapons other than they are extremely dangerous, I went and did at least a good hours worth of research and looking up information on this topic.
I picked out all the vital facts, figures and information that I thought I would need for my poster, in case I were to include text/facts or to just in general to inspire me to create certain ideas. What I gathered from my notes was that not matter where you are in the world, everyone is going to be affected by a nuclear weapon, and the best protection against that is to disarm them. If you don't die instantly from the blast, you'll either die from the starvation of having no food, or the poison from the radioactive oxygen in the air that will seep into your system.
Then I went on to brainstorming my most powerful/conclusive ideas. I thought about having a 'food chain' technique/theme where I could illustrate how the impact of one blast would affect everyone in several ways from primary, secondary to tertiary and this would be interesting to plan. However I didn't know if this would be too obvious? I then thought about illustrating disarmament as a shield, almost personifying it and showing how it is the only safe and reliable protection against eliminating nuclear weapons. I also thought about actually drawing the nuclear weapons and then their effects and have bones as a symbol of everyone and how they will be obliterated. And finally, one that stuck with me, was to include children. Children are the essence of innocence and I think that this is a great  route to go down. If people are effected by the thought of children being effected then maybe it will make this issue more serious to them, and therefore in effect they will take my poster more seriously also.

Overall I have a lot of ideas to play with and research more into, but I am excited about getting started with this poster because I think it can be really effective and creative!
