Responsive: Penguin - A Clockwork Orange Research

For Penguin's brief, I decided to start with Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange" because it's synopsis seemed the most intriguing to me. The plot surrounds themes of drugs, prison and hooligans, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to improve my drawing skills. Before I even started planning my book covers, I did a quick search on the previous designs that have been released for this book to see what the general theme publishers go for.

For the most part, the running colour is orange, in accordance to its title and all but one include some sort of face/figure. I think I would like to do something different to this, maybe take the title more literally? I feel like the face and hat has been done a lot now, and maybe a new approach could work. I find myself attracted to the more simplistic of the covers produced, perhaps because I feel like they mirror the 'futuristic' tone of the book.
Typography is a key element that Penguin is asking for with this particular cover, so I am definitely considering this aspect more so than the illustration, though I want the illustration to stand out. Penguin are also asking that this cover stands out from others on the shelf, so I think bold colours will be a must for this one. Bright orange and white are two colours I am imagining playing with, very contrasting and speak volumes.

Overall I find I have some strong ideas to experiment with. I want to create a cover that is bold but doesn't give too much away, yet simultaneously attracts new modern readers. I am definitely thinking of myself when creating this cover. I am always attracted to creative and clever covers when I am in a bookshop, so I want to make something that I, myself, a modern reader, would reach for.
