After choosing Penguin's 'A Clockwork Orange' as my first responsive brief, I got straight to analysing the brief in detail. The thing that stuck out to me most was that they were looking for a fresh new cover. No cliche's. A new and original concept that they have not seen before. Therefore it will be important for me to look at previous published covers, so I can have an idea of what has been produced, and what route not to go down. I also got from the brief, that Penguin are asking for something that is eye catching on a bookshelf. In other words something that stands out from the rest. Immediately I am thinking of having a white cover. Purely because the last time I went into Waterstones I saw a book named "Quiet" that was pure white and stuck out from all the other books on that shelf. Either that or a neon, bright colour.
I want to get a lot out of this brief. I want to push myself to make a design that is complex just like the novel, but appears quite minimalistic. I also want to create something imaginative and something that has not been done before, something memorable.
After dissecting the brief, I got on to brainstorming a few ideas. I was sure about having orange as a key colour, so after thinking about how white books stood out in the room, perhaps white and orange would really go great together. I also had ideas about having the book as if it was inside a prison cell, because part of the book involves jail and this would be a challenge to try and replicate. I also thought about having the character as silhouettes on the cover, or having their faces on the front and the back of their heads at the back to give this 3D feel which I have not seen been done much before. Another idea I had was to take the cover literally, as I have not seen this been done before either. Literally have clock hands on an orange slice. It sounds bizarre but I think visually, it could work. Penguin also emphasise that typography needs to be a strong element on this cover, so I will have to experiment plenty with that once I get designing also.
