After deciding that Hayley and I both want a circus related theme, I got onto doing some sketches and plans of ways in which we could set up our scene. I was really looking forward to making our environment because since I have never used a 3D software before, I thought that the world was literally our oyster and we could go above and beyond to try and make it look as animated and detailed as we possibly could, without being too over ambitious.
I thought about having only a few objects in our scene so that we could very easily establish that the environment is at a funfair in combination with colour palette experimenting. I also thought about having hot air balloons in the background because I knew that they would be easy to move/float slowly across the screen. I did have a worry that our scene would have too much going on and would clash a lot, so I tried to keep everything simplistic but eye catching!
I then had too many ideas in my head, so I got out a pencil and pen and started to draw the objects how I thought I could model them. This was a much easier way for me to visualise our scene because I would be able to model them accordingly, and to scale. So far I really like the tent, wheel, stand and balloon stand, so hopefully I will be able to replicate these once I become more experienced and confident with Maya. If I do make these, I will be extremely proud of myself, and will have learnt how to model objects so that in future projects I can aim even higher!
When I presented my setting ideas to Hayley, I was very pleased to hear that she liked them! We then sat together and on her ipad designed this outdoor setting for our opening scene. We discussed a lot of things, and we decided to change our original carnival colour ideas to a more darker colour, as we could play with the current autumn theme inspired around us. We also decided to have the background 2D and then model the tent, to save us a lot of time so we could focus on making our characters and animating!
After I had a better and more clear view of what we were going to achieve in Maya, I decided to do a more refined design of the tent so we could use it as a reference once in the software! I drew the front, back and the top of the inside of the tent, and then coloured them in the colours we discussed. I also made the tent a little wider, purely for allowing enough room when the camera does it's swooping/flying motion into the tent!

Hayley also came up with the idea of having yellow and purple flying banners around the tent which I would have never have thought about it. I thought purple would clash awfully amongst the red and yellow, but it actually goes together very nicely and I am glad she came up with it. I also like how round the tent is, as this means when we animate the characters inside the tent, we don't have to worry about corners and other aspects looking slighting awkward in certain frames!
So once I designed the tent, I did a quick design with some sun and grass, because I really wanted to try and change the lighting in Photoshop to get some idea of what it will look like in Maya once we add spotlights to the intro.
I ended up with this. I think when I actually come to animate the scene it will be much more effective and aesthetically pleasing, but at least I have a little guidance to help me along now that I have done quite a bit of planning!
