For the next part of my model I needed to make the eyes. This was a pretty simple task as it required me to make a few spheres and point them in the X axis direction so that the iris would be central.
I ended up having to do this at least 3 times however, because something kept going wrong with my spheres and they weren't symmetrical, so they would keep overlapping when I opened and closed the eye. But in the end I think I got them to look as realistic as I could, which left me to duplicating the first eye so the second would be exactly the same, freezing transformations and also deleting the history.
This is what they looked like in proportion to my models body.
Then it was onto UV mapping which is quite simple enough, however it is easy to miss a step and get something wrong and therefore the whole map is ruined. I had to 'cut uv edges' for all the separate body parts that I wanted to be able to unfold, this including hands, legs, torso, head and feet. I also had to go down the back of my model and down the legs so that I was able to unfold the consecutive body part. But when I used the 3D Unfold tool, my map was looking great so I just had to scale them down.
Which meant I was just left with the eyes to do. I changed my perspective to a 'top view' and mapped the upper eye lid, unfolding it so that nothing touched each other and then duplicated this for all the other eye parts. Once I had done that I moved them into the rest of the map and saved a UV snapshot!
I opened this snapshot up into Photoshop, inverted it so that I could see the lines more visibly, duplicated that layer, set it to multiply and then had a go at making a texture.
I found a really nice glass texture online and therefore tried to apply to it to all the body parts, however when I added it as an existing material into Maya, it didn't look good at all, in fact it looked awful! It looked like a crocodile skin, not glass, therefore I think I am going to have to watch a few more tutorials before I add another texture again.
