Maya Making A Replica (Part 1)

For the next studio task, we to make a replica of Matt's already rigged model to gain a stronger feel for Maya and the tools that we may need to use when we start making our own character. I started by importing the reference pictures into my 'sourceimages' folder so that I could use them as a guide the more I start to build up my character. I then pushed them to the back of the plane and switched to X-ray mode in order to be able to see over the references. We were also to model only half of the character, so that add the end we could mirror it and then have a very symmetrical model.

The first area I started to focus on was the hips/waist area of my character which is essentially one of the most important parts in making my model pose realistically and naturally. When making this part, it included a lot of using 'Insert Edge Loop Tool' and 'Slide Edge Tool', which are options both new to me. But now I can see how important they are and I am sure I will be using them in order to expand the surface area of my character as well as add more detail to its mesh.

Though it was not much as of yet, once I pressed '3' in the program I was able to see a smooth preview of my hips and I could see my character really start to take shape. This was a confidence boost for me, and I was then extremely eager to carry on.

Therefore I ended up making the whole of the character torso and shoulder area and was very pleased with how it was looking. For this part I did a lot of 'extruding', making sure I used the global mode and not local mode so that it extruded correctly, as well as making sure I had my edges selected and not faces. This part was a lot more intricate in the sense of following the reference mesh. Sometimes when I moved a vertex too much, a large area of my model didn't look right so I had to take more time to correct it. However so far I think it is looking great!
