Sound 006

The next sound I chose was sound 006 and I really wanted to do this one because I felt like it would allow me to experiment with abstract forms that I have never worked with before!

I was instantly drawn to initially wanting to draw sound waves, even though I know it is a very common technique and it used in many different ways by many different people. So i thought I would draw them and try and experiment with them.

I then came up with these two as developments, by making them look more 'grainy' looking, because that was the main adjective I had when describing this sound. The sound to me is very fuzzy, there's no structure to it, no fluidity and it certainly isn't smooth. Therefore I wanted to experiment with sharpy lines, a grainy/noise effect and also the colour grey.

This next piece I drew is very sporadic in terms of its rhythm, because there is none. The sound is confusing, theres no clarity and is muffled. I thought a clashing bright red colour would be good to experiment with as well as the deep and thick lines to represent the boldness of the sound.

From that I came up with this piece which I really like and I think would be great to turn into an animation through just distorting the patterns in it. To me this represents the noise perfectly, it's all scratchy, yet still inherits the sound wave.

I then decided to do a black and white version of it but make it a but more glossy looking and I really like this piece also. I think this wlll be the one I develop into an animation because I think red is too much of a loud colour for this piece. It is a bold sound, but it isn't very loud. And this one has some sense of pattern, but then some sporadicalness which is perfect for the soundclip.

I then decided to take a completely different route and try something else. Since I was happy with the sound waves I thought I would try some other pieces that could have the same interpretation. I love how these pieces have this 'television noise' feel to it through the neon colours you would get on your screen if there was no signal in the old days. So I think these were successful however i'm not sure how I would actually come up with something that would make them move in an interesting way.

These next two were just more experiments on how I could visualise the sound. I thought the sound had some sort of pattern though it was distorted so I thought the best way to represent order would be through lines. Then I could go in and distort them myself. This is what I cam up with and again since they are in black and white I really like them. Again, they are a bit TOO organised to make them move, all I can really think of to animate them would be to change the velocity of the grain which could be one direction to go in.

Then lastly I thought I would try and develop my sound wave piece that was initially some scribbles and in red, a bit further. I wanted to see how far I could distort the piece, and I ended up with this. I think this would work as a final piece but because everything is so sharp, i'm not sure it does the sound clip any justice.

Overall I really enjoyed experimenting with this sound because there was just so much direction with it. I followed the themes of grain, disorder and shades of black/grey in order to come up with several pieces which I thin reflect the sound quite well!
