Analysing Sound - Arctic Monkeys

The Arctic Monkeys "Do I Wanna Know" music video, I thought would be perfect for analysing the animation in conjunction with it's sound.

This animation almost goes completely hand in hand with the Take 5 brief because is aids you in visualising sound, visualising the chords of the guitar being played through the sound waves. Every beat in animated in perfect timing. After the waves of the beats of the song are played, there is then the echoes of the chord on the guitar, which you can see vibrate and it almost makes the song feel twice as effective, as opposed to if you were to just listen to it without the video, because you can actually visualise the vibrations.

There are then parts of the video where when Alex Turner (the lead singer) holds a note for a while or goes from high to low, and this is illustrates by the waves actually moving in time with his voice. One example of this is at 0:44 and it looks so smooth and effortless because it is arranged perfectly.

This video also uses COLOUR, to then symbolise other aspects. For example when other members of the band start to sing in the chorus, the colour of the waves change to blue, and this is a reoccurring element, so you can signal when the echo of the band members come back in. Also when the drums start to kick in, after the bridge MORE colours are signalled, so there is now blue, red and yellow for each of the instruments and they all have their own sound waves which I think so clever and well put together.

As the beat starts to get repetitive, objects are added to the soundwaves, for example some boots walking in time with the drum. There's something about tapping your feet to the beat of the music which everyone does and because it is done here I think it just adds to the atmosphere of everything being organised and systemised.

Overall this music video is so simple, yet at the same time so diverse in each of its musical elements. It uses colour and timing and different symbols to signify certain things in the video such as instruments and certain singers. And I think this is a really clever thing to do and I hope to take influence from this in my Take 5 brief also.
