Applied Discovery Channel 8) Animating Part 2

Next I decided to have a go at animating the desert sequence. This is the sequence that i most enjoyed because and I think it turned out the best also. I was determined to get the best sweeping motion that I could and I think I actually did get a pretty good one. For this composition however, I decided to make the wings and the birds body separate .png's so that I could have them on separate layers and animate those separately as well. This for me was very useful, and looks effective however like the beach sequence, I had trouble matching the rotation with the position and again it took me a while to get them matched up perfectly. I am very happy with this sequence and I am glad because it is the opening sequence of the ident itself!

Last to animate was the safari at night sequence which I left last because it wasn't my favourite to design in the first place, and as I expected it was the hardest one for me to complete. I think I made it at least five times before I was content with it, and I would still try and have a go at redoing it if I had the time. I ultimately just had the butterflies out of all the animals moving at the top of the screen, but I felt that that was a bit too minimalistic so I went ahead and altered the giraffe composition so that the body, neck and head were separate layers and moved them in a path which follows the direction of one of the butterflies. As if the giraffe is watching the butterfly, fly off. And then lastly, the ostrich just moves slightly, again I made separate layers for the body and neck so that I could have some individual movement for both.

Overall I am very happy how the animation came out. I thought I could achieve this ident very simply and easily after getting to grips on the advanced After Effects session so well, but I proved myself wrong. There were many different situations where I had to look to help, and my animation was certainly a bit more complex than the session, but I feel like this has pushed me out of my comfort zone into a programme that I have never used prior to university. I would definitely use After Effects again, which I have done for my PPP animated self project. So if anything, this side of the Applied brief has motivated me to work harder at my skills to keep on improving.
