After doing heaps of brainstorming and moodboarding, I thought to go into Photoshop and just go for the settings and see where they take me. And as a result of this, I am very happy with them!!!
The first one is a desert, which I wanted to have a warmer colour palette since the climate there is obviously scorching and dry. To make this more visceral, I added noise to each layer just to make it look 'grainy', as if sand would actually look like this. However because I liked the result so much, I went ahead and added noise to every setting, to keep the theme up. Drop shadows were important for me to add because I wanted depth to the ident. But I also became fascinated with an inner shadow. This again plays around with the depth, but I also felt like it makes it look texturised and more aesthetically pleasing, so I am glad at how it turned out.
The next one I chose was a beach using the obvious familiar palm trees, sunset and sea. I chose to go very vibrant with this setting just because I really like how the colours look against each other. It was important for me to do each component on a separate layers because I wanted to make EVERY one of them move, even the slightest amount in After Effects. But by doing this also made it very simple to work with. I wanted to have a beach because of the shark week, so from my animatic and storyboard I was going to involve this aspect so that I am still considering all areas of my initial planning and that of the channels contents.
Then lastly was the night time safari setting. This on was the most awkward for me to do just because I usually like to stick to loud colours and I feel like the colour palette for this scenery is more softer. Though it is dark to illustrate the night time, there is less of a contrast in colour so I didn't feel as confident with this one. However I do like it and once I put my safari animals in there, I think it will pull together nicely.
Overall i am very happy with the change of plan for the Discovery Channel ident. Though this wasn't initially what I planned to do, I feel like i am having more fun putting the setting together, taking everything into consideration and just overall being able to experiment with colours and textures.
