Model Making Workshop 4

Session 4 was very similar to session 3, but I found it was still enjoyable, but a bit messy!

We started off by removing the clay walls that we had made in the last session since the plaster of paris had definitely set by this point, and we were revealed to the back of our model! We did a little but of cleaning with a damp warm sponge, but I found I had clay in so many crevasses in my model because of how finicky I was with the clothing. So that is another reminder for the future!

But again we rolled out some clay and repeated the wall process same as last session. We didn't have to make the walls as high, or at least I didn't have to, because there weren't really that many outstanding features that would have required me to on my model. Just before we poured the plaster in, we went over with this soapy sticky solution so that when we were to open the mould back up again, we could do it with ease.

We then waited half an hour for our plaster to set and I found it set quicker because of the heat from the sun!

We then removed the clay again, and shaved the sides of our moulds so that they were harp and clean like shown above, ready for the foam in next weeks session.

We then soaked our moulds in some luke warm water and it should have been easy to open up. Mine needed a but more soaking, and when I first initially placed it in the water it started to fizz quite a bit! However I did open it up and it looked alright! Taking my model out of the first cast though proved extremely difficult and I ended up really ruining my model. However we still have yet to have the foam session so I hope it doesn't go as badly!
