Responsive Collaboration: 2/03/2016 Meeting

In today's meeting, we all talked about how we were going to make a physical mock up of our doll house. Because this brief has such a short deadline, we have decided to make a mock up of one room, making it in the wood workshop and building it ourselves. We are also planning to laser cut our furniture and then stick designs onto the 2D cut out nets from Illustrator. By making one physical room we will be portraying the concept more thoroughly, as well as showing that we are serious about the construction of our entry.

We started off by calculating the dimensions of the display so that we know what we are working with and so that we can actually be authentic with our mock up measurements. The brief calls for a concept that is in a window (2.4m high, 6m long and 1.4m deep). Because this is so large, we decided to make one of the rooms that is will be a third its actual size; this being 60x30x30cm (est). Though this is still big, it gives us room to experiment and explore the 2D furniture, without knocking things over, as well as being able to photograph it well enough. During our meeting we went to woodwork to ask John if this was possible and he confirmed that it was, and that we could make it easily and with no problem. We decided collectively, that we would choose a living room to mock up, as this illustrates all homeware, electrical and beauty/clothing, that the brief calls to display.
Sophie's illustrations
Whilst we were still together, we talked a lot about how we could illustrate the furniture physically and what theme this room could have. We wanted to stick to the trends that are forecasted for Autumn/Winter 2016, this being 'Around the house', and a 70's geometric aesthetic. The future of the shopper is all about following trends, keeping up with themes online, so this is something we are really trying to push in a creative, distinctive way. Whilst we were all talking about our ideas, Sophie created the perfect illustration of what we were saying. She included lots of 'homely' items, because a living room is rather homely and family connected, and because we feel like John Lewis is all about this, we thought of lots of items that we could relate in this way. Items such as a warm fireplace, sofas, plants, clutter, etc. We don't want to be modern or too abstract because this will deter from the friendly and homely feeling we want our room to radiate.

My Collages

Also in this session, Jess started to make a collage of John Lewis furniture that we could take influence from and print onto our laser cut paper/cardboard. I thought this was such a good idea, and I made some myself. I stuck to the 70s themes, using the vivid colours and the clashing prints. There is always a lot going on in these patterns, but we all agreed that we would be extravagant and not be too scared of being busy. I really enjoyed this part of the preproduction, and I think I might make some more collages for the different rooms for our boards, so we have examples of what kind of furniture we could have within the different sectors (children, kitchen, etc). Tomorrow we are going to begin to build our mock up room, which we can then think about scale and placement of the furniture.
