Applied 2: Wildlife & Environment Research

As a starting point for my research, I decided to look at the WWF website to see what animals are being effected by the environment today. Hayley and I both agreed that we wanted our animation to include animals, and since that is a very broad area to make an animation out of, I thought I could start by looking at those that are endangered, to see how we could refine our idea, to make an interesting documentary.
Though WWF aims to protect all animals on this planet, from those in the ocean, fresh water, forests, etc... I thought perhaps wildlife in particular could be an interesting area to research. This is because it is not an everyday occurrence to see animals in the wild, and the only place you can really find out about them is through books or documentaries. In addition, wildlife animals are critically endangered from environmental impacts, such as climate change, deforestation, and lack of resources. This means that if we were to take this route, then our main purpose of our animation would be about animal conservation, and informing our audience on how they can make an impact to help protect and save wildlife from extinction. This also means that we could have a bigger audience as opposed to a niche one. Families as a whole love animals and are the largest demographic for wildlife documentaries, therefore our information could be broadcasted to more people. However it could restrict us in terms of the extent of our information. We may not be allowed to raise certain issues if they are too graphic or emotional, as it would not be appropriate for a younger audience.

When looking at the wildlife that is endangered, there are over 100 different species on the WWF website that are at risk. Whether this be from extinction, environmental impact or human's doings, there are so many animals that are losing their food sources and habitats. I personally love animals, therefore I am really motivated to make this documentary for this brief because I think more people need to know about the dangerous impacts if we lose more wildlife. Impacts that will greatly effect us. Firstly everything comes full circle, so if a certain species becomes so effected by the impacts of climate change or deforestation, then the general food chain will be altered. Those higher up on the food chain will suffer due to having missing food, and those lower will live longer, and therefore eat more of their choice of food, resulting into the whole chain being off balance. It will also mean that humans food resources will be disrupted as a result. Also medicine is another aspect that will be at danger. A lot of medicines derive from plants, so if there are less insects pollinating, then there will be less plants and flowers reproducing which means no source for medicines. Same goes for herbs and herbal remedies.

Tigers, penguins, rhinos, gorillas, turtles and whales are just some of the few animals that will be affected by climate change and other risks to the environment. Changes in sea levels, sea temperatures, global temperatures, plant (food source) growth and changes to habitats will greatly effect the lives of wild life. And I think this is a very, not only interesting but seriously important topic to make an animated documentary about, in order to raise awareness and spread the message to a new and larger audience.
