Responsive: Secret 7 Jack Garratt Research

I have chosen to create a vinyl cover for Jack Garratt's "Worry" as one of the designs for Secret7, because I actually listen to Jack Garratt and like his music! Therefore I think it would be a great opportunity to create visuals for an artist who I appreciate and have gotten to know. I also think that this will be a great because Jack Garratt has an unusual voice and puts such unique compositions together, so it will be a chance for me to experiment with another different technique that I am not used to.
Because the brief is rather open minded and doesn't have too many restrictions, I wasn't sure which direction to go in first, so I had a look at his actual lyrics as well as listening to his new song "Worry" over and over. I highlighted words that I could possible explore and expand in a creative way, these being: broken, stuck, lies, pieces and pick apart. I think that there are so many ways you could interpret these words as they could potentially be demonstrated through line work, colour, patterns, etc. However these are very strong words to me, so I am thinking of creating a cover that is sharp, maybe dark in colour and a bit obscure, just because those are some of the things that you can feel when you are worried or in a worrying situation.

I looked at Jack Garratt's previous album covers to see how other people have visualised the tone of his music, and saw quite a range of styles and interpretations, no two the same. This implied to me that he is open to experimentation, but that he likes original and different concepts, that are creative and represent his music. I wouldn't immediately say that all of them are bold because some of them are quite relaxed looking and only involve neutral colours, but sometimes I think these can be the most powerful ones, because they aren't trying too hard for attention. I particularly like the line work in the bottom right and the bottom left, as I feel like his songs are so personal, that complexity in the cover parallels with those meanings.

I also wanted to look at Jack Garratt's stage presence. I noticed that a lot of the times when he is performing live, he has a certain aesthetic on his stage, most apparent through lighting. He uses neon lights which creates almost a glow/mysterious feel to his concerts which is quite engaging as it brings the audience closer to his music. The colours of his lights emphasise the tones of his music. Because he has such a chilling voice that goes quite deep but then really high, when the colour changes in the lights, it heightens the atmosphere and brings the audiences senses up, so their experience is more visceral. I think this is a really clever idea, and has inspired me to think about colour and tone a lot more for this design.
From all my research and visual combinations of images, I decided to do some brainstorming of possible ideas and routes I could take this cover. I actually had a lot of solid ideas which surprised me because I thought this would be quite difficult, but I found several ways of illustrating the tone of worry so I was really happy at the variety I could pick from. I thought about experimenting with just creating a very obscure cover, something with a lot of layers, a lot of lines or geometric shapes to portray the vulnerability and confusion of being worried. I then thought about turning this into a pattern, or perhaps being really literal and trying to illustrate a worrying situation. I also remembered the aesthetic of his stage and thought about incorporating this somehow, maybe going with blue lights because I think that this colour resembles worry most, as it is a colder feeling than red. And then I considered doing a self portrait of Jack Garratt but again, being really obscure and either making it out of a lot of lines or a lot of shapes. I think the main theme and idea that I want to get across is obscurity and/or vulnerability and this will be through the type of technique I go for or the colour palette to set the instant tone of the piece. But I am really excited to get started because I love his music so it will be interesting to try and express it!
