Responsive Collaborative: The Icebook - Light Projection Research

Because I am interested in producing some light projection for our Responsive collaborative brief, I wanted to look at some existing content that seemed moderately attainable to me, instead of immediately looking at work that is of such a high standard, and not within my efforts. My friend recommended me this video "The Icebook" from Davy and Kristin McGuire which consists of projecting light through short live action video clips and animation. The first switch between before and after really captivated me and opened my eyes to the things that I could possibly achieve. This is the aesthetic that I want to go for, glowing street lamps, trees and fireworks on a dark night sky background. I am so glad that she recommended this video to me, because I thought it wasn't achievable so now I have a reference to look back on.

The video is made up paper cut outs that are folded so that light can pass through them and sometimes, half way through them. Once this is set up, light is projected onto the paper, illustrating the live action videos that the producers have recorded themselves, as well as some other animations, like snow and water.

I was confused at first at how they did this because I didn't think that black would project well, however what they did was, for their animation pieces, they drew their animation with white brushes on Photoshop and After Effects, onto a black background, so that the light would only project the parts that were white and not black. I thought this was genius and easily attainable for me. I think I will have to do a good amount of tests before I can fully commit to an animation, but now that I have some guidance, I am excited to get started with experimenting.
